Television
Television is one of the most powerful inventions of all of the
20th century. It has changed the way we look at the world. Through satellites
['sætƏlaıts] pictures are sent from one part of the earth to another within seconds.
"News travels fast" goes an old saying, but it has never been more true than it is now.
Television has increased our knowledge and opened our horizons. We
have never before known as much about other parts of the world as we do now,
thanks to television. Through our television set, other countries, cultures and
events are on the screen in our own living rooms. Documentaries about different
countries as well as about people in our own society have widened our knowledge
of the world and surely this must result in greater tolerance and
understanding.

The Press in Britain and Elsewhere
Read the text and do the task after it.
It's common knowledge that newspapers report the news.
Published on a regular basis, usually daily or weekly, they also interpret
events behind the news. In addition, newspapers give useful information, such
as stock market prices, weather reports and television programmes.
They are also a popular source of reading for
entertainment. People often buy newspapers for their feature articles on
subjects of wide interest, such as travel and fashion, for their comics and
crosswords, and for their regular columns on topics, such as gardening, eating
out, show business, gossip and astrology. Together with other means of communication,
such as radio, television, and magazines, newspapers form the media. Printed
forms of the media, including newspapers and magazines are also called
"the press".

THE MADAME TUSSAUD'S: How It All Began
The origins and
history of Madame Tussaud's are as fascinating as the wax portrait figures.
Marie Grosholtz (later to become Madame Tussaud) was born in Strasbourg in
1761, two months after her father, a soldier, was killed in the Seven Years'
War. Marie's mother took a job as a housekeeper for Philippe Curtius, a doctor
who was skilled at modelling wax to create anatomical figures.
In 1767, Marie
and her mother moved with Dr Curtius to Paris where he opened his first public
exhibition of wax figures. He taught Marie the techniques of wax sculpting from
an early age, and she became so proficient in it that she was soon making
figures of many of the prominent people of the era such as the writer Francois
Voltaire and the U.S. statesman Benjamin Franklin (both on display today). It
wasn't long before Marie's skills came to the attention of Louis XVI's sister,
Madame Elizabeth, and Marie was invited to live at the splendid palace at
Versailles to help in Madame Elizabeth's artistic education. Marie spent nine
years at court and whilst there she created figures of Louis XVI and his
family.

The Lennon Legend
John
Winston Lennon was born on 9 October, 1940 to a troubled, working-class Liverpool
family. John's father deserted (бросил) his mother when John was only three, so Lennon was sent to live with
his aunt, where he was a rebellious child. Frequently skipping school, Lennon left
High School at the age of 16 after his aunt persuaded the headmaster to write
him a recommendation to Liverpool Art College.
At art school Lennon became
involved in music, buying a guitar and starting a band in early 1957. That
band, the Quarrymen, evolved over the
next few years into the Beatles. Lennon remained a principle singer and
songwriter for the band through its decade-long career, splitting these duties
with Paul McCartney. The pair agreed early on to share songwriting credits,
though they directly collaborated on only a few of the Beatles' hits. Lennon,
for his part, contributed more experimental and mystical music during the
band's later years, while McCartney was more pop-oriented.
